About the Dissertation
Simulation games offer a unique platform for players to immerse themselves in realistic scenarios, learning new skills and exploring various interests. My dissertation delves into the strategies and elements that sustain player engagement in these games, a crucial factor for their success and longevity.
Research Focus
The primary research question guiding this dissertation is: “How do you maintain engagement in a simulation game?” Through this question, I explore various aspects such as dynamic difficulty adjustment, gameplay mechanics, narrative depth, and the role of immersive environments in keeping players invested in the game.
Key Elements of Engagement
- Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment: Ensuring that the game adapts to the player’s skill level, providing an optimal balance of challenge and enjoyment.
- Gameplay Mechanics: Designing intuitive and rewarding gameplay systems that encourage players to explore and master the game world.
- Narrative Depth: Creating compelling storylines and character development that foster emotional investment.
- Immersive Environments: Building detailed and interactive game worlds that captivate the player’s senses and curiosity.
- Social Interaction: Incorporating multiplayer elements and community features that enhance the gaming experience through collaboration and competition.
Case Studies
To support my research, I analysed three popular simulation games: Cities: Skylines, Stardew Valley, and The Sims 4. Each of these games exemplifies successful engagement strategies, from dynamic city-building challenges to immersive farming and life simulation experiences.
Conclusion
My findings highlight the importance of combining various engagement techniques to create captivating simulation games. By understanding and implementing these elements, game developers can craft experiences that not only entertain but also educate and inspire players.
